Facilities Master Plan

Eastpointe Community Schools is inviting you to join us in shaping the future of our district as we look at the usage of our district buildings and facilities. While there are tough decisions ahead, with your help, we'll ensure our schools provide the best learning and working environment possible for our students, staff, and community.

We've partnered with Woolpert to provide an objective, independent assessment of our district's needs and develop a comprehensive, 50-year facilities plan.

Woolpert's assessment, combined with our own observations, has highlighted the need for significant attention to Eastpointe High School's infrastructure within the next five years, a surplus capacity across all our buildings, and a focus to maximize the benefits of our bond investment for students, staff, and the community. This will require some tough decisions about restructuring and reinvestment in our district facilities.

No final decisions regarding facilities have been made at this time.

At the March 25, 2024, Board of Education meeting, Woolpert presented five potential options for facilities master plans. These are just options and opportunities for further discussion at this time -- we may land on a plan that has not yet been presented based on community input and discussion.

Community members are invited to attend one of the input sessions facilitated by Woolpert, either in person on April 17 from 4-6 p.m. in the Eastpointe Middle School cafeteria, or virtually from 1-2:30 p.m on April 19. There will also be opportunities to submit comments and questions outside these meeting times.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a “Facilities Master Plan”?

A facilities master plan is a strategic blueprint that guides the development and management of a organization's buildings and infrastructure over time. This plan will be put together with input and consultation from the community to guide the district on how to best utilize its facilities, and will be grounded in the Strategic Plan.

Is my child’s school closing?

No plans for school closures have been made at this point, though we do expect to see changes to our current grade level structure and building use once the Facilities Master Plan is finalized.

Currently, the district is at about 40 percent utilization of our aging school buildings, which means a large amount of money is being spent on spaces that are not being fully used. By looking at potential building closures or consolidations, these funds could be to improve and revitalize the space our students need and use.

No decisions will be made until district leaders and the Board of Education hear from families, staff, and community members about what they want to see for Eastpointe Community Schools.

Will there be job cuts?

No job cuts are anticipated as part of the Facilities Master Plan. In fact, we are hiring!

How will these changes benefit my child?

Student success is at the heart of our strategic plan, and will be at the heart of our facilities master plan. The decisions we make together with the community will allow us to refocus our dollars on our students. This means renovating and reimagining the space we use for learning by cutting out the expense of maintaining space we do not need.

How can I voice my concerns or share my questions?

Students, families, staff, and community members will have multiple opportunities for comment, input, and suggestions, including a pair of input sessions facilitated by Woolpert:

  • In-Person Input Session - April 17, 4-6 p.m., Eastpointe Middle School cafeteria
  • Virtual Input Session - April 19, 1-2:30 p.m.
  • Online Surveys/Comment Boxes TBA
What analysis has occurred to assess ECS trends on school size, mobility patterns, etc. and how has this been factored into the concepts being presented now?

Eastpointe Community Schools contracted with Partners in Architecture to perform a full facilities assessment in 2020 to look at the condition of our buildings and the cost to make all necessary repairs and upgrades. This information was presented to the Board of Education and the community in October 2020.

Following the passage of our bond in August 2023, we have contracted with Woolpert (formerly Cooperative Strategies) to develop a long term facilities master plan. They assessed the overall condition, capacity, and usage of our buildings, as well areas of concern raised by building leadership and staff. They initially presented this information to the Board and community on February 12, 2024.

Where can I find new information as decisions are made?

Eastpointe Community Schools is committed to transparency in this process and keeping our community informed. We will continue to share regular updates on our website at eastpointeschools.org and update this Frequently Asked Questions page as the process moves forward.
